Harcourt Trophies

2nd Grade

This year I started doing inclusion with my 2nd graders for part of the day.  Our 2nd grade uses Trophies, so I created some activities that were on the instructional level of my students but coordinated with the stories in the reader.  You can find some of the activities here, and more activities specific to some of the stories can be found on the linked pages.  I hope you find some things you can use in your classroom and if you have activities to share (on or below grade level), please do.

Henry and Mudge: This idea was shared by Nikki.  She found some craft fall leaves and made "ed" words and glued them on the leaves.  The students will work in pairs and come up with a sentence using an "ed" word that's on their leaf.  They will write their sentences on sentence strips.

Hedgehog Bakes a Cake: Below are printables for a recipe for individual cakes made in a Dixie cup.  They are then baked in an electric skillet (with the top on).  Make sure that you get the cups with the small lip on the bottom that keeps the bottom of the cup from sitting directly on the skillet.  There are also comprehension and sequencing sheets and a brief to note to parents concerning supplies included with the file.

Lemonade for Sale: Below are printables for a recipe for individual lemonade and an activity for matching the vocabulary words from the story to the correct definition.

Another idea is to have a real lemonade sale!  You could set up on the playground and sell during recess and have the kids graph their profits.  They will love it!  If there's more than one class, you can have a competition to see which class sells the most.  The class will need to decide beforehand what they'll do with the money ... a class party, a class trip, something for the classroom, or donate it to a good cause.

Printables online for The Mailbox  K/1st Jun/July 2007 - tshirt pattern and blackline and colored chain reaction picture cards.  I can't put my hands on the magazine at the moment (mine is probably at school) to match the printables with what's in the magazine, but there's only 4 chain reaction cards and they're numbered.  (not the whole sequence from the book)

Cool Ali:

Provide students with sidewalk chalk and allow them to create scenes that are opposite to the current weather.  If it's cool or cold, they can draw a fire.  If it's warm or hot, they can draw rain.  Have them transfer their drawing to paper (optional) and write or discuss if their drawings made them feel warmer or cooler.

Anthony Reynoso: Born to Rope:

Know someone who's on the rodeo circuit or who's a bronco bustin' wanna-be?  See if they can line you up with someone to come in and show your class how to handle a rope and maybe even to rope a dummy steer ( a chair or overactive 2nd grader will work just as well! :) ).  This is also a good story to practice your Mexican Hat Dance and to break out the mariachi band and maracas and maybe have a little fiesta!  Don't forget the pinata!!!!!
